Twitter’s former trust and safety chief said that Elon Musk’s management style has made Twitter less secure! Kayvon Beykpour, co-founder and CEO of Periscope, tweeted out what he thought was an inoffensive joke, but Twitter quickly took it down, saying it violated the company’s rules on targeted abuse and harassment — despite there being nothing offensive or abusive in the tweet itself. But this isn’t surprising given the way that Musk has handled customer service issues since he took over as CEO of Tesla and also became chairman of Twitter.
Twitter Not Safe Under Elon Musk
Elon Musk has always been known for his tough leadership style, but Twitter’s former chief trust and safety officer says that the Tesla CEO is making his company less secure. In a podcast interview with Recode, Del Harvey said that the way he manages people is really interesting to me. In other words, employees at Tesla are constantly on edge and afraid to speak up about anything because they fear being fired from their jobs without warning.
Harvey cited an incident in which a member of her team raised concerns about how white supremacy was being amplified on the social media site. Her response? I just want you to know I can’t stop you from doing this. The message was clear: if you’re not happy, there are plenty of other companies where you can work.
Accusations About Elon Musk
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and Space X, is one of the most recognizable and controversial business leaders. He has achieved enormous success in his endeavors by prioritizing efficiency, engineering, and design. However, he has also received criticism for his leadership style which some say makes him a bad fit for a company like Twitter.
Leslie Miley, the former trust and safety chief at Twitter who worked on creating policies to address harassment and abuse on the site before quitting last year, recently spoke out about this issue in an interview with The Guardian. He said that The way
It’s no secret that Twitter has been struggling with its security. It hasn’t been able to keep up with its problems and has allowed scammers, spammers, and trolls to run amok on the site. Not only is this making it difficult for actual users to use the site safely, but it has also made it very difficult for Twitter as a company.
For example, last year when the presidential election was going on, bots were used to tweet pro-Trump messages at people who expressed their views about Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders. So what does this have to do with Elon Musk?
The former trust and safety chief for Twitter, Del Harvey, said in an interview with Bloomberg that the company is less secure than it was before. This is because of the way that CEO Elon Musk manages the company.
In the interview with Bloomberg, Del Harvey said that before she left her position at Twitter, It had already been reported that there were a lot of people who had left because they had reported feeling less safe.
Another reason why people have not been as safe on social media has to do with Facebook. In April 2018, Mark Zuckerberg testified in front of Congress about data privacy and how Facebook collects users’ data. He also talked about the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
Conclusion
Trust and safety are becoming more of a concern in the social media space, especially with Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey saying that he doesn’t want to be the arbiter of truth when it comes to content on the site. But even if Twitter executives don’t want to be responsible for what goes up on their platform, plenty of users do—and they aren’t shy about speaking out against abuse and hate speech.
