Twitter vice-president for engineering, Nandini Ramani, met with aspiring female coders in Khayelitsha, South Africa to discuss how to use technology and social media to grow their success.
About 60 girls from GirlHype, an organization that aims to empower young women with digital and media education skills, attended the event. Ramani was joined by about 40 other TechWomen whom discussed their work experiences and gave advice for future success. TechWomen is a mentorship program that supports female leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem).
The purpose of the meeting was to bridge connections between generations of technological women and to encourage women and girls to pursue careers in Stem. It has been proven that women in Stem jobs earn 33 percent more than those in non-Stem occupations and experience a smaller wage gap relative to men.
The young coders from GirlHype were able to glean firsthand accounts and experiences from women working in some of the biggest and most innovative companies in the world, such as Twitter, Symantec and Juniper Networks.
In an age when everything has been infused with technology, Ramani stressed the importance of conferences and assemblies, such as TechWomen’s meeting in Khayelitsha, because they provide girls with the access and opportunity they need to advance their careers, pursue their dreams and inspire women and girls in their communities.
