International Day of Peace
Over thirty years ago, a resolution was passed at the United Nations. It enshrined the International Day of Peace, a day which is commemorated all over the world. The day is devoted to ‘strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples’.

The famous ‘Non-Violence’ sculpture of a knotted gun stands in many locations around the world. One of these is in front of the United Nations Headquarters in New York. In 2001, a unanimous vote in the General Assembly established September 21st as an international annual day of non-violence and ceasefire. The sculpture represents the organisation’s continuing commitment to world peace.

The world is not wholly in a state of peace. While it may no longer be the case that many countries are fighting against each other. Instead, many countries are fighting hostile or oppressive forces within their own borders. With this in mind, the aim of the International Day of Peace is to keep the spirit alive at all times.
