The United Nations has been accused of many things. It has been called anachronistic, and ineffective. Despite many criticisms, the United Nations has played a crucial part in world affairs. This week, the United Nations celebrates seven decades of existence. As the organisation turns seventy years old, people all over the world are flooding Twitter with tributes using #UN70.
A safer world?

For 70 years, the @UN has demonstrated how incompetence, impotence & ignorance on a global scale lead to poverty, war, & division. #UN70

The United Nations International Day of Peace was celebrated at the end of September. The aim of the organisation is to promote dialogue between nations, preventing the outbreak of war. In our world today, the end of war is nowhere in sight. Nation after nation has been driven to armed conflict. Saudi Arabia’s war with Yemen, Syria is still a major battleground that has caused the greatest humanitarian crisis in recent memory, India and Pakistan may be on the brink of war, and even former pacifist Japan may have its sights on Russia. In that regard, perhaps the United Nations can be seen to have failed in its mission.
More than peace

It is perhaps short-sighted to assume that the remit of the United Nations is simply to stop all war. This is no easy task. The United Nations serves as a broad umbrella, promoting universal human freedoms, and committed to the alleviation of suffering, the world over. Promoting dialogue to secure peace is just one piece of this. The United Nations is instrumental in promoting education, alleviating world hunger, and many other humanitarian goals, from its myriad of branches. As the United Nations turns seventy, it is paramount that all remember the important work it continues to promote. The termination of war is not the only battle left to fight.
