Located in the Qinghai province, the province is located on the Qinghai plateau and long been home to a number of ethnic groups including the Han, Tibetans, Hui, Tu, Mongols and Salars.
With most of the region lying at altitudes of 3000m or higher, the Qinghai consists of rolling plains lined with vivid mountain ranges, harsh winters, and mild summers.
During summer local monasteries organise various Tibetan activities from operas and to horse races. The events have a religious significance and villagers, participants and nomads alike gather for a few days at a time.
Attendees set up temporary tent camps for the duration of the events and spend their time buying and selling traditional and regional specialties. Between the highlights and local performances, they spend their time eating yak meat dumplings and drinking butter tea.
