Rio de Janeiro is to open its doors to the largest outdoor boat show in Latin America. The annual Rio Boat Show is in its nineteenth year, and will showcase the best of the nautical world.

Despite the marina works being surrounded by controversy, the event expects to welcome 40,000 people to its shores. The reform of the Gloria Marina lasted a year and four months and was made with the aim of hosting the sailing events at this summer’s Olympic Games.

The company responsible for the work was BR Marina. Besides reforming the pier and creating new parking for boats, the company installed a new covered space, and implemented collection of rainwater. The project will also have restaurants and shops, and was completed on April 7, to ensure it was on time to receive the Rio Boat Show.

This event brings together shipyards, industries specialising in engines and equipment, suppliers of parts and technology, and other areas of the production chain. All in all, more than 80 vessels of various sizes and styles will be on display.

At Rio Boat Show 2016, free lectures and topics will be available. Whether you want to prepare for an ocean voyage, learn to fish better, or know more about Brazillian shipwrecks, there are lectures for anyone.

In addition, there will be a breathtaking exhibition of underwater photos. Among the nautical novelties on display this year will be the yacht Schaefer 830 and speedboats Princess 68, Bayliner 350, and Coral 30C.

The reform of the marina have been at the centre of legal action. Among the concerns is the venue’s divergence from its original intended purpose towards entertainment.

The company responsible, BR Marina said that not only had the work been fully authorised, the Brazilian institute responsible for preserving heritage sites conducted several studies before approving the project.

From July 13, the marina will come under the exclusive operation of the Olympic Organising Committee. Despite these controversies, the Rio Boat Show will be the first major event to take place in the new development. The event will happen on April 17, with 120 exhibitors from the nautical world.

All the important industry news can be discovered in a unique environment. The new picturesque Marina da Gloria certainly makes for good postcards.
