On January 26, 2015, Chinese artist Shi Qi commented on his artistic form of expression during an interview at the offices of the Shi Qi Research Association in Beijing’s Sanlitun district: there are three forms when undertaking an oil painting: concrete, abstract and impressionist. Incorporating these three forms of expression into one work is Shi Qi’s pursuit going forward.
Shi Qi, born in 1940, graduated from Fujian Art Academy in 1963 and became a professional painter at Beijing Painting Studio in 1976. He is the former deputy director of the Art Commission of Beijing Fine Art Academy, a researcher at the China National Academy of Painting and chairman of the Shi Qi China Art Research Association. Since 1972, the year that he started to gain public recognition, his works have steadily received high acclaim. He has created courses for new Chinese paint artists and the courses have served to educate nearly one thousand students over the past more than ten years. He published more than 30 print collections of his work and held over 30 individual exhibitions in China and abroad. Shi Qi has won world peace awards from four organizations including UNESCO, the gold medal at France’s Louvre Salon, as well as twice making the list of the United States International Artists Association’s Top Ten National Art Maestros in China.
